But when the area of cultivable land is covered with our expanding population and cheap homes for immigrants are no longer attainable. then our dependent classes will multiply and our laborers will have to compete with the machines with which an undue development of mechanical genius has superseded American labor. Then we will require free access to all the world for the sale of our surplus products. It would be a wise statesmanship which shall anticipate that era not now. far distant and begin at once the preparation for a free commercial intercourse with all the world.
