I shall afterward have something to say in answer to what we have just listened to from the gentleman from Maryland. What. then. is the bill which we take from the Speakers table. the Senate bill. and upon which our votes are to be given. and which I it is demanded of us to pass in its entirety ? The first section suspends all immigration into this country of Chinese laborers for twenty years. The second section punishes the master of any vessel of whatever nationality who shall bring within the jurisdiction of the United States and permit to be landed any Chinese laborer. This section applies to the Gulf of Mexico. to the Atlantic Ocean. to the Pacific Ocean. and to every frontier of the United States approached by water. it punishes the violation of its provisions by a fine not exceeding $500 and imprisonment for not more than one year.
