The westernwing. then. or the Pacific wing. if that will suit the gentleman any better. Let nme. as I was about to say. explain to him what the Republican platform really means. and then show to him that I stand upon it better than he does. It is the Democratic platform that says "no immigration." it is the Republican platform that recognizes the right of every nation to protect itself against pauperism. disease. and crime. and it says "Restrict and regulate immigration so it shall not endanger the country or any portion of it." I agree with what was said yesterday by the gentleman from Indiana. that li is worse than an infidel who does not protect his own family. I would protect every section of these United States by proper guards against immigration. so as to keep out an undue influx of pauperism. crime. and disease. These difficulties are not experienced alone on the western coast. Only the other day the Representatives of Now York called attention toi the necessities of that State for protection ugaitist foreign imigration not to turn hack that tide of immigration xvhih has set in through New York and outdo it great and powverful. but to regulate it so that cri mie. disease. and pauperism shall not flow in unchecked. That is what the Republican platform means. not to prohibit immigration. not to suspend it. but to regulate it. to restrict it. to control it. and to make it. instead of a curse. instead of it danger. a blessing and a source of prosperity. Mr. Speaker.
