I wishto suggest to the Senator from Nevada another consideration. which is that the effect of Chinese immigration has been to prevent and keep out white immigration. The consequence of a short period would be to settle up the country by Chinese. We want white immigration from the older States and from Europe for the settlement of the country. If the term of this suspension is short. and the people we want know that in ten years the floodgates will be opened again to the Chinese. they are not going to come to California. because about the time they would begin to settle in that country the Chinese would come in again. and they would come in competition with that race. That is an additional reason why we are contending for the longer term.
