I did not say yesterday that the people of the Pacific States had a right to determine this question for themselves. Dealing with foreigners. dealing with persons who had no rights in this country. except such as we. the people of this country. see proper to concede to them. I did say that upon that question. so far as it concerned the Chinese who were in their midst. their opinion as to the evils of Chinese immigration should have great weight in our deliberations. that I preferred the experience. the trial. which these people had had with the Chinese immigrants to the speculations of persons who knew nothing about it. and that is as far as I went on that subject. That is all I want to say.
