We have as good as donated sixtysix millions of dollars. which. with interest. now amounts to about one hundred millions of dollars and land grants covering a territory larger than the Republic of France or the German empire. to open a great highway by railroad to the commerce of the East. which brings that commerce to our doors by a route thousands of miles nearer than it can be reached by European nations. In addition to this. companies of capitalists have constructed a southern line of railroad across the continent. to put the southern section of the Union in closer relationswith the Eastern powers.
