This question is not by any means one that is agitated in our State by the class referred to by the distinguished Senator es the persecutors the ruffians. ashe was disposed to term some of them. It is the entire population of the country. The merchants. the mechanics. the business men throughout the State. with a unanimity unprecedented. oppose the further immigration of these people. It is true there are some capitalists. some gentlemen engaged in large enterprises. who can employ Chinese at a much lower rate than they can employ American or white laborers. and therefore those men prefer having what they call "cheap labor -" but the masses of the people. the agriculturists. the miners. all the industrial interests in the State have proclaimed in unmistakable terms their voice. not to be misunderstood. that the immigration of these people is a detriment to the best interests of the populations of Callfornia. of Oregon. and of Nevada. The honorable Senator yesterday referred to a portion of the report of Senator Morton. in which he said that in passing over the State of California he saw so many uncultivated acres of land. What was the cause of that? I will answer the honorable Senator. Thecause is that this class of immigration. these laborers. have preventedwhite immigrants from seeking a home in California. They have driven from employment the everyday laborer. They have provoked riot.
