Session #47 · 1881–83

Speech #470007281

At all events that side refused to vote and kept us from going into executive session to consider the executive business. among which were these treaties. I heard the honorable Senator say that at this time we were endeavoring to shirk the responsibility. Oh. Mr. President. that will not succeed with the people of my State. They know that Senators on this floor. both republicans and democrats. have their views upon the question of Chinese immigration. and they know that my honorable colleague and myself do not differ in sentiment in reference to this important issue which our people are most interested in. They know that fact. and yet my colleague has been tied up. I do not I know by what means.
