Then a country west of the Mississippi had been purchased for Indians living cast of that river. In 1846 part of the south half of that region had to be repurchased for Indians living in the north half of it. The limits of the region guaranteed to the emigrant tribes "forever" had already been curtailed. and the object of the treaties of 180 was to provide for a further curtailment. Among the fifteen tribes visited by Commissioner Manypenny in 1853 there was one. the Wyandots. who. in case a Territory was organized. wanted to change their system. and "conform to the now orderof things." In January. 1853. they made a treaty. which declares them sufficiently advanced in civilization. and that "being desirous of becoming citizens. their relations as an Indian tribe shall be dissolved and terminated." except so far as their continuance may be necessary for certain purposes. and such of the Indians as might desire it were to continue on a tribal footing. T.hose who wished it were to be citizens.
