Now. sir. I have never understood that to be the point made by any one in regard to the position of the Indians in the United States. The language of the fourteenth amendment is that_ All persons born or naturalized in the United States. and subjectto thjurisdicflea thereof. are citizens of the United States. Nobody has evercontended. as far asl haveheard. that Indians were not persons. We punish them. we drag them to Fort Smith week after week and bang them under the laws of the United States. and how could they be hanged if they were not persons T They .re tried. .sentenced. and hung as individuals and as persona.
