W. Cromwell. a colored clerkin the Treasary Departmen. who proves that himself and a r. Adams secretary of the Washington Aid Society. advised a company of North Carolina emigrants. who were stranded in this city. to change their destination from Kansas to Indiana. This witness. when asked why he advised them to go to Indiana. said "they could get work in Indiana and not in Kansas. because Kansas was a new State. and the people there are making their first strnggles. and are not in a condition to employ laborers as largely as in old States like Indiana." The witness says that he was induced to believe this from a circular he had read. issued by J. H.
