These appropriations were increased from time to time. and as the geological and scientific survos increased the appropriations for publicland surveys wero cut down. The laud surveys were made in sections where settlement was going on. In regions to which immigration wa directed. the others by a strange device sought sections of country where no one wanted to go and where no one will want to go. Bat in spite of all this Congress went on nutil the ornamental survey exceeded in attention aud threatened to swamp and asob the publicland surveys. Then this Geological Survey was instituted for the purpose of classifying the public lands and making known the resources of th.
