I present a petition of the German Society of the city of New York. asking Congress for such national legislation as will protect emigrants arriving in this country. stating the reasons why such protection should be given. the urgent necessity for it. and closing as follows: The undersigned directors of a society called into existence in 1784 for the ex. press purpose of protecting and assisting the emigrant upon his anivel here. cannot afford to have the times repeated when those emigrants were robbed and plundered when they set their feet upon American soil. and after that were left to shift for themselves. And your petitioners will ever pray. &c. CHARLES ItANSELT. President.
