Among the general inquiries required by the census act of March 3. 1879. to be made by enumerators was one in relation to the naturalization of foreignborn persons. and another in relation to the ownership of the public debt. These two inquiries were stricken from the schedules by the second section of the Senate bill now before the House. The House Committee on the Census recommend a disagreement with the Senate in this section. For the purpose of calling the attention of the House to the fact that this recommendation is not in accord with the wishes or the judgment of the Superintendent of the Census I ask that the letter which I send to the Clerks desk may be read.
