Speech #460045335

Mr. President. I took the opportunity. man by man. as I had occasion. to talk with emigrants from every State represented in this exodus. and I never found a man who did not come there with the desire of getting fair wages for an honest days work. There never was one. so far as my observation goes. who did not come there for the purpose of going to work and getting a home for himself and his family and enjoying the privileges of education and protection in his political rights. There was one man from GeorgiaI call the atten. tion of thq Senator to this factwho. when I asked him what the condition of affairs was in that State. corroborated very largely what that Senator has said about the educational advantages there.
