I offr the following resolution. and ask for its favor of the United States against the said Henry Page and his sureties. to the present consideration: effect that the said Page. as special agent and disbursing officer. received from the Whereas large numbers of negroes from the Southern States. and especially United States the sum of $287.50 on the 23d of June. 1868. with instructions to pay from the State of North Carolina. are emigrating to the Northern States. and es- the same to Miles Shinn. a discharged soldier of Company G. One hundred nd pecially to the State of Indiana . and thirteenth United States Colored Troops. and that on the 13th day of JuL. 1868. Whereas it is crrently alleged that they are induced to do so by the unjust and the said defendant in good faith paid the same to a person claiming to be Miles cruel conduct of their white fellowcitizens toward them in the South: Therefore. Shinn. and who presented the discharge of and was identifed as Miles Shinn by Me it resolve That a committee of five members of this body be appointed b J. T. Daniels. but that the person to whom the said sum of money was paid by its presiding Wcer. whose duty it shall beto investigate the causes which have l dtfendantwas not Miles Shinn. and that the said Miles Shinn has never been patl to the aforesaid emigration. and to report the same to the Senate. and the said the said sum of money by the defendant emigration. . if upon these facis the court is of opinion that the defendant is liable. then we committee shall have power to a etdior persons adpapers. compel the attendance find for the United States. the plaintiff. the sum of two hundred and eightyseven of ituesses. and to sit at any time. dollars and fifty cents ($287.50). with 6 per cont. interest from the 13th of July.
