First comes politics. in the jury. six and six republicans or democrats. republicans or greenbackers. Catholics or knownothings or whatever hey may be. There are your two parties. one a republican the other a democrat. or one a knownothing and the other a man in favor of having everybody of foreign birth. whether naturalized or not. participate in the government of the conntry. and so on. and you will have done more to obstruct the course of justice that would outweigh by a millionfold the two or three instances that gentlemen think they have heard of where the present laws have been illadministered to the detriment of justice through the partiality of marshals or the errors of judges. And when you have established the political character of jury trials between man and uman. how long will it be before somebody. equally an inventor of great patent rights. some new cancus or other. will bring forward a religiQus test here and say that we will have two more jury commissioners or clerks. one of whom shall be an orthodox Presbyterian and the other shall be attached to the faith of Rome or whatever so that they shall be of opposite religions? Then first you must get men of opposite parties. second they must be of opposite religions. and so on. the principle is exactly the same.
