Session #46 · 1879–81

Speech #460006880

It was fraud nder a hypocritical pretense. a wearing of the livery of the court of Heaven to serve the devil in. The proof is abundant in two reports before the State Legislatures and before the Congress of the United States. I may as well mention the fact here that a man by the name of Davenport arrested over three thousand citizens in the city of New York without knowing whether they were going to vote for members of Congress or not. without inquiring whether they were going to vote for sueubers of Congress or not. on the assnmption that their naturalization papers were not valid. though issued teo years before. because the clerk in 1868. ten years before. as I said. had failed to note them on the reeord. The judge (Blatchford) in Coleusans case decided. and the district attorney agreed beforehand. that lie had no right to make those arrests. yet it was done. atd he was maintained and sustained. and We are told the President of the United States is going to veto a bill which seeks to get clear of a man like that and of a system like that. and we are charged. arraigned. indicted. and denounced because we seek to repeal the law that infaunos nan boasted as having been drawn by bini. ard that he had passed through Congress by his influence over confereiie committees. in order that he riight rob the peouples Treasury and annul the laws of New York. Will any mas pretend that the Federal Government has a right to invade the States of New York or Pennsylvania and interfere with the election of a President. or interfere with the election of a governor or any of the State officials t I answer no: and yet under the baldest pretense. taking advantago of the fact that by the constitution and laws of these States tho Tuesday after the irst Monday in November is the day fixed for the general elections.
