Speech #450105307

The republican party has not only dignifiedlabor by its work of emancipation and enfranehisement. but by putting in operation awise and equitable homestead system. available to the humblest citizen. it is possible for the workingmen of our country to become independent and comfortable. and individual labor selfsustaining and selfrespectful. With such a record as a party on the question of labor. I may appeal with confidence to gentlemen who share my political opinions to give the pending measure favorable consideration. In cenclusion. Mir. Speaker. allow me to say this movement for protective legislation against Mongolian emigration is one of great unanimity among my constituents. It has extended to every county. possessed every public journal. and thoroughlymastered the public sentiment of all our communities. It does not originate in prejudice. but springs from matured thought and is the result of a settled conviction among our people.
