Support of common schools .............................................. 8165. 000 Dividend to academies ............................................ 8. 800 Teachers classes in academies ........................................... 18. 0O0 The average yearly income of the commonschool fund of New York exceeds 5 per cent. of the principal. so that there have been realized from that portion of the f railderived from the income of the surplus revenue fund about $600.000 in thirty. one -ears. and the present capital of the commonschool fund is partly composed. of the yearly sums set apart from the income of the revenue fund. which sums amount to $775.000. Thus it appears that from this fund of about $4.000.000 set apart by the United States for the benefit of the singIs State of eNow York that State has been able to realize for the benefit of public education the munificent sum. of about $7 016.000. of which more than threequarters of a million form a permanent capitai. bearing interest. Aid to colored schools.-Tho General Gorernment. on the organization of the bu. reau of refugees and freedmen in 1865. began to aid schools for the education of colored chihren. This aid amounted. so far as can be ascertained. to $3.711. 25.47. But this sum. large as it appears. does not include all. as some thousands of dollars paid out for the transportation of teachers and for other expenses connected with the schools cannot be separated from other items with which they are charged.
