Session #45 · 1877–79

Speech #450095363

I understood him to say that the bill left these ministers as they are under the present law but I may have misunderstood him. Our commercial relations with Belgium and the Netherlands are as important as with any other nation in the world. From these countries we have. perhaps. a larger immigration than from any other source. so that in this respect there is more need of a minister than with regard to any other nation. I think that the discussion had last year on this point must have satisfied those who remember it that those are important places and that ministers to them should be retained. I will not prolong the discussion. for I do not think it necessary.
