Speech #440085408

During the winter of 162930 onefifth of the settlers at Salem and Charlestown died of exposure and disease. The survivors did not number more than three hundred. and these were broken and disheartened. and filled with the gravest apprehensions for the future. Several of the settlements had been abandoned. and the very existence of the colony was in peril. Winthrop brought with him about one thousand persons. chiefly immigrants from Suffolk county. and they were reenforced in the next twelve months by at least a thousand more. These accessions were from the educated. competent. selfsustaining classes. In six years. and in their capacity as a cofony. they founded and organized the college at Cambridge.
