Session #44 · 1875–77

Speech #440078984

I beg to suggest that he is mistaken. The religious toleration that began with the beginning of Maryland was a toleration that was inaugurated as well by Protestants as iy Catholics. There were immigrants and settlements in that State of both denominations. and in the face ofa common danger. and far away from any common support or fountain of ai4. like wise and true men they agreed on all hands that each should be at libertyas everybody else should who should come to themto worship God and to teach His religion according to the dictates of their own consciences. There is no special right. therefore. in the Catholics of Maryland to claim that they are the authors of religious toleration in that State. I am sorry that my friend from Maryland has left the Chamber. because I am sure if he were here I could recall to his mind the early events in that State. which would convince me. if he meant to be understood otherwise. that I ant correct.
