Session #44 · 1875–77

Speech #440036897

The subject of this resolution is importast to every State in which there is a port where large numbers of immigrants arrive. It is very important to the people of the State of New York. The laws of New York carefully protected both the State and the immigrant from imposition. but those laws are held void by the Supreme Court of the United States. I trust there will be consideration given to the subject by Congress during this session. It is quite important that there should be some general law which shall tend to protect the immigrant coming in. to protect him after he has landed. and also prevent him from becoming any serious burden to the State. I move that the resolution be referred to the Committee on Commerce.
