Session #44 · 1875–77

Speech #440027535

I think. in the interest of humanity. (for he is human.) and done by the Government of the United States. Our people will not allow him to have a fifth part of our territory to roam over wildly and to commit his depredations upon our frontier. The frontier settler and the emigrant demand protection. and this Government is strong enough. and it must give them that protection. The Indian also deaonds protection and should have it. and the Government has the power and the will to give him that protection. but lie ntist consent to lie settled on reservations and be kept there. Now. sir. in what I have stated thus far I meet with no opposition.
