It is an immense reservation. It is over fifty miles in width. and I do not know how many miles in length. hut still longer. That reservation lies directly across the emigrant road that passes from the great overland road to Oregon and to Washington Territory. Over that emigrant road fourfifths I presume of all the present adult population of Oregon and Washington Territory have passed in going to that country. In fact the only way to go to that country really is by land transportation. That road is known as the old emigrant road. It is marked by the graves and the bones of emigrants who have passed over it. There is one matter in connection with this to which I wish to refer. Settlements have been established in Eastern Oregon and in Washington Territory in different directions from this reservation.
