But I do not propose to treat this subject theoretically alone. The experience of Chinese imtnigration through which we are now passing is of the most startling character. and must be my apology for craving the consitteratei atten ion of this House to the subject in sone of its most important details. The Chinese began to immigrate to California soon after the distevery of gold placers in that state. their object being doubtless that of gold miniig. More tian two tlousand were at workin tteptacers and ihe moitains before the close of 1852. and simce that time they have steadily increased i nunbers until their present population is somiethiug nmre than seventy thousand. Tile single pursuit of gold mining in placers woul have emited the early Chinese immigrants bet ter tha any other occupation. but such was the lush of people to California for the three or four years after gold was discovered that it was impossible for them profitably to followit. They were molested by other and stronger adventurers. If they found a. placer of any value they were drive from it.
