In 1860 the number of Chinese in the State of California was. according to the census. 34.933. Up to 1870 they increased nearly 50 per cent.. their number the latter year being 49.310. During the two years succeeding 1870 the Chinese steamers have not brought less than 12.000. and simcethe commencement of 1873 there ltave been 15.000 more added to this nutnber. The annual immigrationwith the increase of facilities for transportation will average forty thousand for the itext live years. probably twice that for the five years succeeding. III less than ton years this will make the population of the State more than half Chinese. But they will not be confined to California alone.
