Speech #430045637

Mr. President. what is this hillI Itproposesancwkindofpreeription that never yet has existed in this country I believe. It is very true that in thu history of tliis country thete have bee some pattioalar tracts of land set apart for the benefit of immigrants. In my own State there was a tract of land known a the Moraviat reservation at Gnadenutten. and another known as the French grant . but I think in all cases there was no such principle of preemption ais this. but the land was ascertined by act of Congress and set apart. in the ease of the French grant to the refugees from Franca during the time of the French revolttion. and in the case of the Gnadeuhutten reservation to certain very worthy people called Moravians. who were makin. special efforts to Christianize and civilize the Indian tribes. But iere is a proposition that if adopted sets a precedent for the nioption of similar propositions whenever any body of men may desire to procure a preemipionof the public lands and apro.mptio of the very worst form. the preemption of large tractslying in a cornpact body. Mr.
