Speech #430020972

Now. so far as this matter is concerned about the flag of truce aud the butchery on Lost River. I think I can present to the gentleman sonie facts which will relieve his mind in regard to the outrages which el supposes were perpetrated on that oceaion. Forlong years those Modoe Indians at Lost River had been constantly butchering the emigrants. Wcry men. women. and children were w{inding their way across that desert of a thousand miles. and on reaching that neighborhood. which they had hailed as an oasis in the desert. where they could obtain rest and water and grass for their stock. they ha& been murdered by hundreds. This had occurred only a few days before this fight.
